Catholic Theology MA begins in Edinburgh in September 2023
Local Catholics wanting to deepening their understanding of their Faith and Church history can apply for an upcoming Postgraduate degree course being offered by the Edinburgh campus of St Mary’s Twickenham.
The two year, on-site course is for university graduates from Theology or other related disciplines, with minimum 2:2 grade required to be considered. It covers all the main areas of Catholicism, from Scripture interpretation to doctrine and systematic theology. Modern practical topics like the Church’s social teaching and ethics will also feature. In terms of finance, the course is not eligible for funding by the SAAS funding body and students must self-fund their studies.
Edinburgh has a long Catholic history, from St Cuthbert’s church, founded in the 7th century to Holyrood Abbey dating from the 12th century, right up to more modern buildings such as the Cathedral built in the 19th century. Famous Catholics include St Margaret, the pious queen of Malcolm III, whose Chapel is still to be seen in tours of Edinburgh Castle. Also, prior to the Reformation, John Knox was ordained a Catholic priest in the City of Edinburgh in 1536, by the Bishop William Chisholm. Today, there are 29 Catholic churches or chapels in the city, and many primary and secondary schools also run by the Church.
