National prayer campaign returns to Edinburgh

‘Trypraying’ ads will appear on City buses

Prayer has always been a central pillar of the Christian life, and a new swathe of ‘trypraying’ adverts will be seen on the side of City buses starting this month till April.

The trypraying campaign is the work of a charity called There is Hope, and was launched in Edinburgh by David Hill. He had a life-changing experience of Christ during his university days, and came up with the idea of producing Try Praying booklets after a chance conversation with a woman at a Christian conference he was at.

In a post on their Facebook page this month they announced that ads would be appear all over the country –

"Thanks to the generosity of many people we have now booked advertising on buses across the whole of Scotland. 60 buses in Edinburgh, 60 in Glasgow, 15 in Dundee, 20 in Aberdeen, 10 in Inverness... in fact, every available bus depot in Scotland will have buses with trypraying adverts on the rear panels.  310 in total across the whole country. If you gave money to help this, thank you very much. The campaign will begin on 18th March and run for a month."

It has been producing its trademark green/blue booklets and banners for a number of years. Currently the charity works in eight countries.

Their own description of their prayer booklets is “a 7- day prayer guide for people who say they are not religious and don’t do church.” The booklets have testimonies of answered prayers, as well as honesty about struggles with unanswered prayers.

The ads on the sides of buses have not always been welcome. A counter-campaign mounted by anti- religion groups once ran an ad saying ‘Try sacrificing a goat – it’s just as likely to work’.

Are the booklets needed? Well, a 2022 survey conducted by Savanta Comres of over 2,000 Brits found that some 28% of their respondents had prayed within the last month, mostly to do with the lives their friends and family. Young people came in at 32% of them having prayed within the last month. (For full results, see here - https://savanta.com/knowledge-centre/published-polls/poll-3-3/ )
